From idea to drug

  • Secondment at AstraZeneca

One of our non-academic beneficiary AstraZeneca, hosted our PhD students for one whole week at their premesis in Gothenburg, Sweden. As the majority of our students are recruited by academic institutions, this inter-disciplinary experience was even more valuable for the consortium. The objectives of this week was to gain understanding of principles of human target validation and drug target candidate assessment following the 5R framework.

Their training focused on target, tissue and exposure, patient and safety. Before the training they were asked to each think and pick a gene or protein of interest (it could be something they were working on, or read in a publication, etc) that they would focus for this course and perform evaluation as a drug target candidate according to the 5R principles.

At the end of the week they presented one slide summarizing the target they chose.

    • "It was a privilege to do a one week secondment at AstraZeneca Gothenburg as part of TrainCKDis ITN program. We did an intensive workshop which focused on understanding the path from an idea to a drug development. We had the pleasure of listening to the talks and interact with many renowned scientists at Astrazeneca and also had a chance to see how research is carried out there. Thank you Anna R. for making this possible, and your time, guidance and wisdom.

    • "I learned the safety considerations for a drug target proposal yesterday at AZ, Gothenburg. Today my peers at TrainCKDis and I are going to present one slide summarizing our proposed target for #CKD I took the advantage of our cohort at EURAC to testify well for my target 🎯" Dariush

    • "Grateful for the opportunity to pop my little bioinformatics bubble at AZ in Gothenburg. Placing omic technologies in the context of drug discovery and design, from target to patients. We all play a role in the process" Claudio

    • "I  liked how we spontaneously started discussing and helping each other and sharing our knowledge since we have different backgrounds (biologist, bioinformatician and statistician)." Marta
    • "Great time spent in AstraZeneca in Göteburg with the TrainCKDis ITN for one week #secondment. The intensive workshop focused on the application of principles of target validation and drug target candidate assessment following the 5R framework. Great discussions and feedbacks." Carlotta

    • "What I gained from this program was not just mere notions, but a shift in my reading frame (allow me to make a genetic joke), which gave me a fresh perspective on my job as a PhD candidate while also making me aware of how much more I need to learn in my scientific journey." Cesare
